Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is therapy right for me?
If you’re considering therapy, that’s already a meaningful first step. People seek therapy for many reasons — anxiety, stress, depression, trauma, life transitions, grief, or simply a desire to feel more connected and grounded. Therapy offers a supportive space to explore emotions, build coping skills, and create lasting change. At Alma Viva, we approach this work with care, compassion, and cultural awareness.
2. What can I expect during my first session?
The first session is a chance to get to know each other. We’ll explore what’s bringing you in, discuss your history and goals, and create a plan that feels aligned with your needs. You’ll have time to ask questions and share anything you feel comfortable sharing. For adolescents, we’ll also include caregivers in parts of the process to ensure comprehensive support.
3. What is therapy like on an ongoing basis?
Therapy sessions are a collaborative space to process emotions, gain insight, and develop practical tools. We use evidence-based modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), and Solution-Focused Therapy. Sessions are tailored to your goals and may include reflection, skill-building, and in-between session practices to support your growth.
4. What age groups do you work with?
We provide therapy for adolescents (12+) and adults, including individuals navigating stress, identity development, relationships, parenting, and emotional wellbeing. We work with caregivers, students, professionals, and anyone seeking to improve their mental health with culturally responsive support.
5. How long are sessions?
Intake sessions: 50–60 minutes
Standard therapy sessions: 45–60 minutes
Short check-in sessions (when clinically appropriate): 30 minutes
All sessions are currently offered via telehealth only, through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform.
6. Do you accept insurance?
Alma Viva accepts a variety of insurance plans to provide accessible mental health support. We currently work with the following providers:
Aetna / NC State Health Plan
Alliance Health (Medicaid)
Ambetter
AmeriHealth Caritas (Medicaid)
Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS)
Carolina Complete Health (Medicaid)
Cigna
Healthy Blue (Medicaid)
MedCost
Partners (Medicaid)
UnitedHealthcare / Optum
WellCare (Medicaid)
For all other plans, we are considered out-of-network and can provide superbills for reimbursement. If you have questions about insurance coverage or to verify if your plan is accepted, please contact our office for assistance.
7. What questions should I ask my insurance provider?
To understand your mental health benefits, we recommend asking:
Do I have mental health coverage?
What is my deductible, and has it been met?
What is my copay or coinsurance per session?
Is preauthorization required?
Are telehealth sessions covered?
8. Is therapy confidential?
Yes, your privacy is protected. Everything you share stays between you and your therapist, with a few legal exceptions:
If there is suspected abuse or neglect of a child, elder, or dependent adult
If there is a serious threat to your safety or the safety of others
If records are subpoenaed by court
We will always aim to involve you in any required steps when possible.
9. Is medication required or a substitute for therapy?
Not necessarily. While medication can help manage symptoms, therapy addresses underlying patterns, beliefs, and behaviors. Many people benefit from a combination of both. We’re happy to collaborate with your medical provider if you're pursuing or considering medication as part of your care.
10. How do I get started?
Starting is simple. You can contact us through our website or give us a call. We’ll walk you through next steps, answer any questions, and help schedule your first appointment. Whether you’re new to therapy or returning to it, you’re welcome here, and we’re honored to support your journey.
